Logan Downtown Alliance addresses proposed Logan Library site

Logan Mayor Craig Petersen has said he would like to see the old Emporium building in downtown Logan torn down, along with the adjacent Poco Loco building, to make way for a new Logan Library on the property.

Logan Downtown Alliance Manager Gary Saxton said the Alliance likewise wants the property to be cleared, but the organization has somewhat different ideas for its future.

“What we would like to see is a really great architectural gem of a building that would complement downtown and the Tabernacle and be a center for commerce to occur as well as a library to be housed,” Saxton said. “We’re not in favor of just a building that is strictly a library. We are, however, in favor of a building that houses the library but also has several other purposes.”

Saxton described a multipurpose facility as a great place for activities such as performances, conventions, rehearsals and all kinds of community events to be held. If it is strictly a library, he noted, the taxpayers will pay for it, but if it has other purposes, there could be a public and private funding partnership.
