LOGAN — Police report the drivers of Friday’s head-on crash in south Logan remain hospitalized, as officers continue to investigate the cause.
A statement on Logan City Police Department’s Facebook page said 24-year-old Derrik Miller was currently in ICU, while 26-year-old Alicia Fithian is in the surgical unit.
Police Capt. Tyson Budge said Fithian was driving a white Hyundai southbound when she crossed the center median near 2600 S. The vehicle struck a blue Chevy head-on, driven by Miller.
Both drivers suffered severe injuries and had to be extricated from their vehicles by emergency personnel. Miller had especially bad injuries, explained Budge.
Officers requested a medical helicopter, which landed on the roadway and transported Miller to the hospital. Fithian was also transported by ambulance to a local hospital.
The speed limit along that stretch of roadway is 60 mph. Investigators believe each vehicle was travelling at least the speed limit but are still unsure what caused Fithian to swerve.
Traffic along US-89/91 was detoured while officers investigated. The accident occurred around 4:45 p.m.
Police are reminding motorists to travel safely during the Easter holiday weekend and to wear seat belts.
