This week is Health Days in Smithfield and city leaders are hoping that people from all over Cache Valley will come enjoy the many kinds of activities. Special events coordinator Richard Varela says many of the traditional popular events will be back, but some exciting new ones have been added.
Health Days begins Monday with a family bike ride and Varela says Saturday is always the big day.
“We’ve added some new things. We’ve still got the Health Days Race, which is actually going to be bigger than usual,” Varela explains. “We’ve already hit our numbers from previous years. We are expecting 450-500 registered runners, which is pretty good for us.
“We’re doing some cool things there. We’re doing chip timing for all of the routes and award finisher medals for all of the participants, which is the the first time we’ve done that here in this city for the mile, 5k and 10k.”
Saturday is also the day for the Health Days Parade which begins at 10 a.m. The celebration ends with fireworks later that night.
Varela says parking shuttles are going to be made available for those attending the various activities.
