Fireworks suspected of causing brush fire in Newton

Fireworks are believed to have been the cause of a fire Monday night on Newton Hill. The blaze burned close to five acres but did not threaten any structures.

A press release from the Newton Fire Department said crews responded to the fire burning in the hillside above Newton Reservoir. Additional units were called out, after it was reported that the fire was growing rapidly.

Darkness and terrain made it difficult for firefighters to reach parts of the fire burning on the east edge. With the use of hoses and hand tools crews were able to extinguish the flames within an hour.

Several crews stayed on site through the night to monitor the scene and watch for flare ups.

Investigators determined careless use of fireworks is suspected to be the cause of the fire.
