LOGAN – A survey shows that Utahns would like to have an independent commission redraw political boundaries in a once-in-a-decade redistricting.
Although other Republicans support that idea, Republican State Senator Lyle Hillyard does not. Hillyard said he does not go along with those who claim redistricting reform will make our representatives and legislators more accountable.
“Everybody claims a bias,” Hillyard said. “It may not be Republican or Democrat, but it may be Logan versus the valley and it may be all those things. It’s an impossible job and I think the legislature does a pretty good job. They have a lot of open meetings, they go around the state, they meet and try to do it the very best. I think the idea of an independent commission is just going to cost money.”
Hillyard said he didn’t believe the results from a redistricting would be much different that they are now.
