The 3rd annual Randy Wirth Half Century Ride raising funds for new bird refuge

The 3rd Annual Randy Wirth Half Century Ride will take place on Saturday, August 12th, with the money raised from the event going to help create a bird refuge at Stokes Nature Center.

This communal bike ride will start at 7 a.m. outside of Caffe Ibis at the intersection of Church Street and Federal Avenue in downtown Logan and will take riders northward towards its halfway point in Newton before heading back.

The event’s namesake was the co-founder of Caffe Ibis with his wife, Sally Sears. After Wirth was killed in a tragic traffic incident while riding his motorcycle in 2014, Sears decided to create this bike ride as a means to raise money for different causes as well as bringing riders past Wirth’s favorite places to ride and bird watch.

“We rode all these lanes and roads in Cache Valley,” Sears explained about the route riders will see on their trip. Two of the stops on the route will be in Amalga and Trenton, places Sears said were great locations for both bird watchers and bicycle enthusiasts. “Cache Valley is one of the primo places to cycle,” she said.

This ride has grown in popularity each year. Event coordinator Dee Cundey envisions even more growth and charitable outreach for future rides. “We would like to expand it for more support and donations for our causes,” Cudney stated.
