Cache Valley 2nd graders learn that the hospital is a safe place

A brand new field trip opportunity for Cache Valley grade schoolers today and tomorrow will introduce the kids to Logan Regional Hospital.

“Our Friend the Hospital” will provide tours for second graders, taking a page from the Weber County Medical Alliance which has sponsored such field trips for decades.

“We went down to McKay-Dee Hospital last spring to see what they were doing first hand,” said Connie Goates of the Cache County Medical Alliance. “What a neat opportunity for the second graders to learn about the hospital, that it is a friendly place.

“This will help them understand what to expect if they have to be there, that it is a safe place.”

Over the two days eight schools-worth of second graders will visit the hospital.

“We will take them into the classroom part of the hospital, but we will pretend they are coming into the emergency room. We will have an (orthopedic), Dr. Peterson, who will welcome them.

“He will show them X-rays of broken bones and he will pick one of the students and put a cast on their arm to see what that is like. At the end of the field trip they will watch him cut the cast off.”

The children will rotate through other areas including a surgery unit, cardiology, pediatrics and the laboratory with hands-on activities at each stop.
