School takes action in racial-slur in video, details hazy

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — School officials in Utah say they’ve taken “appropriate action” against teenagers shown yelling a racial slur and expletive on a cellphone video, but they won’t say what was done.

Weber School District spokesman Lane Findlay said Tuesday that privacy laws prevent them from detailing what administrators did after their investigation into the 10-second video made by high school students, three of whom are cheerleaders. All appear to be white.

He says the girls recorded themselves saying a nonsensical phrase and an app played it backward to produce the offensive words. It was made a year ago on fall break and posted recently on Instagram and caught widespread attention from there.

Findlay says the girls are very apologetic. The district is considering anti-discrimination training for students and staff.
