Helping seniors with an array of decisions

KVNU has a program on Saturday mornings to assist older individuals titled “Senior Moments”. The hosts of the program, Sid Roderer and Bruce Lee, were guests on KVNU’s For the People program on Wednesday.

The two also are principals in a group called Empowering Seniors, which is a group of professionals from all different studies of expertise as it pertains to issues facing seniors. Roderer, who has a background in real estate, said the group is sort of her brain child.

“Watching my grandparents age and seeing some of the difficulty and the lack of information and some choices that were made (that were) rash and quick…that had caused me to reflect and think ‘I wish there was a place where you could get all the information that pertains to aging, which has to do with housing, which has to do with financial things, all that in one place,’” Roderer said.

Lee was one of the original people who started to collaborate with Roderer as they started doing educational events in the North Logan Library. They had a group of professionals who would come in and answer individual’s questions without trying to sell them something and with no pressure. Lee’s expertise is home health care.

“When they want to learn about services, fortunately or unfortunately, they have to sit across from somebody who is trying to sell them services. So what we’re trying to do with Empowering Seniors is provide those resources in a way where they don’t have to feel like they’re being sold but they can get the information that allows them to make decisions on their own,” Lee explained.
