Department store Herberger’s will be closing its doors in the Cache Valley Mall. The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. announced on Wednesday that 42 locations will be closing throughout the country. The Herberger’s in Chubbock, Idaho will also be shutting its doors. They are the only two stores under The Bon-Ton Stores banner west of the Mississippi River that will be closing.
“As part of the comprehensive turnaround plan we announced in November, we are taking the next steps in our efforts to move forward with a more productive store footprint,” said Bill Tracy, president and chief executive officer for The Bon-Ton Stores in a press release. “Including other recently announced store closures, we expect to close a total of 47 stores in early 2018.”
The Logan Herberger’s store opened after a major renovation and much fanfare in the fall of 2014. A little more than three years later the store is closing because of slumping sales. Besides Herberger’s, stores under the name of Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Younkers and Boston Store are part of the nationwide shut downs.
“We would like to thank the loyal customers who have shopped at these locations,” Tracy continues, “and express deep gratitude to our team of hard-working associates for their commitment to Bon-Ton and to serving our customers.”
The store closing and liquidation sales will begin right away and are expected to continue for approximately 10-12 weeks. The exact date of the Logan store’s final day is not yet known.
The Logan department store participated in several fundraisers, donating thousands of dollars every year to local charities and organizations, including both the Logan and Cache County school districts.
The Cache Valley Mall was recently purchased by a Namdar Realty Group, a privately held commercial real estate investment and management firm based out of New York. The mall has struggled to maintain tenants over the past decade.
