Russians get gold…Norway to get medal…Windy conditions on the course

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — The Russians have finally won their first gold medal of the Pyeongchang Olympics while the Canadian men’s hockey team won’t even get a chance to play for gold after losing to Germany in the semifinals. Fifteen-year-old figure skater Alina Zagitova edged training partner Evgenia Medvedeva to bring the Russians their first gold.

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea (AP) — Norway’s mixed doubles curling team will be presented tomorrow night with the Olympic bronze medal that was stripped from the Russian team at the Olympics in South Korea. The International Olympic Committee said in a Twitter post that the two Norwegians will receive their medals at the medals plaza in Pyeongchang. It’s a rare quick turnaround for such an occurrence.

The hosts beat Japan 8-7 in the women’s curling semifinals, earning the right to play in Sunday’s championship game against Sweden. The Korean curlers have become a sensation during the Olympics, where they are known by the pungent bulb that is grown in their hometown.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — A shrinking number of players are under par amid blustery conditions at the Honda Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Rickie Fowler had six bogeys in a seven-hole stretch today to finish at 77. He is certain to miss the cut. Luke List dropped just one shot in his round of 4-under 66. He’s at 137, 3 under par.

NEW YORK (AP) — Josh Bailey has agreed to a six-year, $30 million deal to stay with the New York Islanders instead of testing free agency this summer. The 28-year-old forward was selected to his first All-Star appearance last month. He has 15 goals and 47 assists this season — already setting career highs for assists and points.
