Utah man to prison for DUI fatal on I-80 west of Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A 29-year-old Utah man has been sentenced to up to five years in prison for driving drunk during a crash on U.S. Interstate 80 that killed a passenger in his car west of Salt Lake City about 18 months ago.

The Salt Lake Tribune reports Isaac Hernandez initially claimed he was not driving when 34-year-old Scott Newman was killed in the crash in Tooele County in July 2016. But he pleaded guilty earlier this month to automobile homicide and driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was sentenced Tuesday to a zero-to-five-year prison term.

Investigators say his car failed to negotiate a turn about 45 miles west of Salt Lake City, left the road, hit a sign and overturned, ejecting Newman, who was not wearing a seat belt.

Two other passengers were injured but survived.
