Mountain West announces 2018 football schedule

LOGAN, Utah – Utah State’s 2018 Mountain West football schedule was announced Thursday by the conference office as the Aggies enter their sixth season in the league. In all, USU will play its eight conference games during a 10-week stretch from Sept. 22 through Nov. 24.

Additionally, Utah State’s non-conference home game against Tennessee Tech will now be played on Thursday, Sept. 13, after being originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 15.

Utah State’s 2018 Mountain West schedule will include home games against Air Force (9/22), UNLV (10/13), New Mexico (10/27) and San José State (11/10), and road games at Wyoming (10/20), Hawai’i (11/3), Colorado State (11/17) and Boise State (11/24). USU’s bye week will occur during the last Saturday in September.

“Our schedule this year sets up nicely for us and our fans to see some quality football early in the year,” said sixth-year head coach Matt Wells. “Three straight September home games in front of our Aggie fans and the HURD will be a huge boost to our players and our program as we navigate through the season.”

After starting the season with a road game, Utah State will have three-straight home games in September for the first time since 1997 and play four home games during a six-week period from Sept. 8 to Oct. 13. In fact, it is the second-straight year that USU has played three-straight home games. USU will then conclude the season by playing three of its final four games on the road, including consecutive road games to end the regular season, as the Aggies have just one home game during November.

Utah State’s non-conference schedule takes up the first three weeks of the season, as the Aggies open the 2018 campaign at Michigan State onFriday, Aug. 31, followed by home games against New Mexico State on Saturday, Sept. 8, and Tennessee Tech on Thursday, Sept. 13. USU’s game against NMSU will mark the 39th meeting between the two programs, in what is the sixth-most played series in school history. As for its games against MSU and TTU, it will be the first-ever meeting for USU.

“Mountain West play is always difficult and this year’s schedule is no different,” added Wells.

Utah State continues its stretch of three-straight home games the following weekend as it begins Mountain West play against Air Force on Saturday, Sept. 22, as the two teams will be meeting for just the seventh time in series history.

For Utah State, it will be the fourth time that it begins Mountain West play at home, including its third meeting with Air Force, and the fourth time the Aggies have played the Falcons in their first MW game of the season, also doing so in 2013, 2014 and 2016.

Following its Mountain West home game against the Falcons, Utah State will have a bye before playing at in-state rival BYU on Friday, Oct. 5, in what is the second-oldest rivalry in school history with 87 previous meetings.

Following its non-conference road game against BYU, Utah State will begin seven-straight weeks of Mountain West play with a home game against UNLV, its 15th-most played rivalry in school history with 23 previous meetings, on Saturday, Oct. 13.

Utah State will then conclude the regular season by playing four of its final six games on the road, starting with a matchup at Wyoming on Saturday, Oct. 20, followed by a home game against New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 27. The Aggies and Cowboys will play for the 69th time this fall in what is the fourth-oldest rivalry in school history, while the Lobos are USU’s 13th-oldest rivalry with 24 previous meetings.

November begins with a road game at Hawai’i on Saturday, Nov. 3, followed by USU’s final home game of the season against San José State onSaturday, Nov. 10. The Aggies and Rainbow Warriors will be meeting for the 16th time, while USU’s series with SJSU is the sixth-most played in school history with 38 previous meetings.

Utah State will then conclude Mountain West play and the regular season with back-to-back road games at Colorado State and at Boise State onSaturday, Nov. 17, and Saturday, Nov. 24, respectively. The Rams are USU’s third-oldest rivalry with 74 previous meetings, while the Aggies and Broncos have met 22 times previously in what is the 16th-oldest rivalry in school history.

The 2018 schedule will play out over 14 weeks, concluding on Saturday, Dec. 1, with the Mountain West Football Championship Game to be played at the home stadium of the highest-ranked of the two divisional champions.

Kickoff times and television coverage for all 12 games will be announced at a later date.

Today’s release represents the first phase in the 2018 football schedule process. Mountain West national television partners CBS Sports Network and ESPN will now initiate a selection procedure, which will include the shifting of particular games to Thursdays and Fridays. That will be followed by the identification of network outlets and kick times, along with the picks for regional partner ROOT SPORTS and the Mountain West Network powered by Campus Insiders.

The 2018 Mountain West football membership includes Air Force, Boise State, Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah State and Wyoming in the Mountain Division and Fresno State, Hawai’i, Nevada, San Diego State, San José State and UNLV in the West Division.
