OGDEN — A Logan High School teacher will wait two months to be formally arraigned on charges of having sex with a teenage girl. Joseph “Scott” Harris was supposed to appear in 2nd District Court Thursday morning on six counts of unlawful sexual activity with a minor, a third-degree felony.
Court records show, a defense attorney notified the court on Tuesday that he had been hired to represent the 57-year-old Nibley man. He requested time to collect evidence in the case. A judge granted the motion and rescheduled the arraignment hearing for April 19.
State attorneys allege Harris had sex with the 15-year-old girl at least three times, between January 3 and February 16. Each of the six charges carries a prison sentence of up to five-years if convicted.
According to charging documents, Weber County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a suspicious vehicle in West Haven on February 16. Inside were Harris and the 15-year-old girl, both partially undressed.
The girl later told deputies, she had met up with Harris multiple times for sex during the past six-and-a-half-weeks.
Harris was interviewed by detectives and said he met the girl online, claiming he thought she was 19-years-old but admitted she looked young. He described meeting up with her three times, engaging in multiple sex acts.
Harris was booked into the Weber County Jail. He was later released after posting $30,000 bail.
Harris has been a teacher at Logan High School for more than 30-years. He taught career and technical education (CTE) and oversaw the school’s daily news broadcasts. He has been placed on unpaid suspension, pending the outcome of the criminal case.
