Air service bill advances on House floor

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — A bill that seeks to preserve and enhance commercial air service in Wyoming has advanced on the state House floor.

The House gave initial approval to Senate File 40 on Monday after debating it for about 55 minutes. The bill must pass two more floor votes in the House.

Under the bill, a special council would be created for one year to solicit bids from airlines and negotiate a $15 million, 10-year contract to provide daily flights to a major airport hub from Wyoming communities that join.

Supporters say air service is important to the state’s economy and air service would be jeopardized in some communities, especially Sheridan, Riverton and Rock Springs, if the proposal isn’t enacted.

Opponents questioned the cost of the proposal and whether it would succeed.
