SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Police say a match of a bloody fingerprint led to the arrest of a 37-year-old man in the 2007 killing of a Salt Lake city-area pool hall owner.
The Deseret News <a target=”—blank” href=”https://www.deseretnews.com/article/900012478/fingerprint-cracks-11-year-old-west-valley-murder-case-police-say.html”>reports</a> Tien Truong Nguyen was arrested Thursday following a cold-case investigation of the death of 36-year-old Tri Xuan Phan more than 11 years ago.
West Valley City police say Phan was beaten and stabbed to death inside his business, Vui Vui Billiards.
It was not immediately clear if Nguyen has a lawyer to speak on his behalf.
Police say investigators re-examined the case in 2016, and Nguyen was identified when the crime scene fingerprint was retested.
Police say Nguyen’s fingerprint was entered in a database in 2015 following his arrest in an unrelated investigation.
