5 women sue Provo, former chief over misconduct allegations

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Five women say the city of Provo and former Mayor John Curtis failed take action to protect them from alleged sexual harassment and assault by the former Provo police chief.

The lawsuit filed Tuesday claims the city failed to prevent misconduct or discipline Chief John King after allegations of misconduct emerged in 2015 and 2016.

The lawsuit also claims the city hired King without investigating his sudden departure from previous jobs.

Curtis, who is now a Utah congressman, asked King to resign in 2017 because of sexual assault allegations. The resignation came after prosecutors concluded the case did not warrant criminal charges.

Curtis says in a statement that he never protected a predator or abuser and acted responsibly with the information he had at the time.

A message left a publicly listed number for King was not returned.
