Terminal illness forces Providence City Council member to resign

PROVIDENCE – City Council member Jeff Baldwin informed Mayor John Drew Tuesday that he will be resigning from his office due to a terminal illness, Drew told KVNU’s Jason Williams.

Drew said he met with Baldwin and his wife midday Tuesday when he was informed of the bad news. He told Drew that he visited his doctor earlier that morning, was diagnosed with leukemia and told he has 10 days to live.

“Speaking to the city staff I have to say that we were totally shocked and stunned by the news and it’s pretty quiet around here,” Drew said.

Baldwin joined the City Council in 2014 and was reelected during the most recent election. According to USU.edu, Baldwin is a professor in the Agricultural Systems Technology and Education Department at Utah State University.

“We asked if there is anything we can do for the family and they said just your thoughts and prayers at this point,” Drew said. “We offered anything we, the city, can do for the family.”
