Two vehicle crash south of Preston

FRANKLIN – Police report two people died Wednesday afternoon after a two-vehicle accident south of Preston. The crash occurred at the intersection of US-91 and Cub River Road, at approximately 12:45 p.m.

Idaho State Police report 83-year-old L. Max Richards was driving a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 80-year-old Phyllis Richards in the passenger seat. The Jeep was southbound, making a left turn onto Cub River Road, when it pulled in front of a 2011 Ford Edge, driving northbound.

The Ford struck the Jeep on the passenger side. The Jeep came to rest on the east shoulder of the road, and the Ford came to a stop in the roadway.

Police report both L. Max Richards and Phyllis Richards succumbed to their injuries. The Franklin couple were declared dead at the scene of the crash. The four people inside the Ford were all transported to the Franklin County Medical Center by ambulance. One woman was later flown by helicopter to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.

The crash partially blocked traffic for approximately four hours while crews cleared and investigated the scene.

Police report the Richards were both wearing seat belts. Three of the four occupants in the Ford were also wearing seat belts.

The crash remains under investigation.
