Dr. Sheri Colberg is a diabetes motion expert who has written a new book entitled Diabetes & Keeping Fit for Dummies, designed to help diabetics manage their condition and enjoy getting fit.
She said one way regular exercise affects diabetes is by managing your blood sugar.
”The reason why it works so well,” said Dr. Colberg, “is that when your muscles contract when you are doing any kind of activity you are able to take up glucose right out of your blood stream, without the need for insulin, which can be a problem if you don’t have any or it doesn’t work well.
“So it’s kind of like having a separate dose of insulin that naturally is a way to get glucose out of your blood stream.”
She said those days you can’t fit in a 30-minute workout, break up your sitting time and every 30 minutes get up and move around.
“You do three minutes here and three minutes there until it adds up to 30 minutes and you get the benefits just the same. And actually it’s recommended even if you do that hour or 30-minute workout a day, that you still break your sitting time during the day because it just makes your metabolism work better.”
She said the book is available on Amazon and in most bookstores.
