South Willard man hospitalized after UTV rollover

Sheriff’s deputies and emergency crews were called to extricate a 51-year-old man Monday afternoon who became pinned underneath a UTV. Gregory Sperry was flown by medical helicopter to McKay Dee Hospital in serious condition.

Box Elder County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Dale Ward said Sperry and a friend were attempting to hoist a Polaris Ranger with a pickup, near 7000 South Canal Road in South Willard. As the two men tried to free the UTV, wedged near a tree, it rolled, ejecting and pinning Sperry underneath.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Sperry was riding the UTV on the canal road Sunday night and got in trouble as he left the roadway. The UTV was stuck near the tree. He walked home and took the friend to help him retrieve the machine Monday morning.

The accident was reported at approximately 12:15 p.m.
