Rocky Mountain Kickoff organizer announces teams, hopes to break attendance record

LOGAN – The Rocky Mountain Kickoff event is coming back to Merlin Olsen Field for a third year with sights set on breaking a record. Event organizer Dee Jones said he wants the annual high school football doubleheader to be the most-attended high school football game in state history.

“We’re going to take attendance at the fourth quarter of the first game and the first quarter of the second game,” Jones said. “Hopefully we can (break the record). It’s going to take about 17,100 people.”

The games will take place Aug. 31 on at Utah State University. The first will put Logan against Ogden at 5:30 p.m. with the second game between Mountain Crest and Box Elder kicking off about 20 minutes after the first game ends.

Jones said he expects the teams to bring a lot of fans to the stadium.

This is the first time all four schools are within 45 miles of the venue,” he said. “Last time we had Box Elder they brought a good crowd. I’m expecting Logan to have a good crowd because it’s the first year of (new head coach) Travis Van Leeuwen. Mountain Crest always brings a good crowd no matter where they go.”

Jones said tickets will be $10 for the general public, $7 for USU students and $5 for high school students. A donation of $1 for each ticket sold will go to The Family Place. The rest of the proceeds will go back to the high schools.

Jones said it will be the only place in town to watch football that night.

“The benefit we really have going for us is that all the other high schools in the valley are on the road,” he said.
