Recovery effort continues for drowning victim in Newton Reservoir

Authorities are still looking for the body of a 35-year-old man who is believed to have drowned Saturday night at Newton Dam.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said Search and Rescue teams suspended the search Sunday night after a second day of looking for the man.  They will resume Monday morning with the assistance of the State Dive Team as well as the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue joining the effort.  Both teams have sonar and other equipment to aid in the search

Saturday evening, a caller phoned 911 reporting that the man was swimming in the reservoir, went under the water, and never came back up.  He could not be found by other individuals who were swimming with him.

It was not known what may have caused the man to go under, but he may have been intoxicated at the time.

Lt. Mikelshan Bartschi said the victim’s identity is not being released until all his family can be notified.

Sheriff Jensen said it’s early in the investigation and more information will be released once they locate the swimmer.
