Cache Gran Fondo growing and now earning national reputation

If it’s the second Saturday in July, it is time for the Cache Gran Fondo. Now in its seventh year, the long-distance road cycling event is Saturday, July 14th. Race courses of 50, a little more than 70 and 100 miles begin at Logan Regional Hospital and end in Historic Downtown Logan.

General Director Troy Oldham says the Cache Gran Fondo has been rated as one of the top 15 Gran Fondos in North America. The race was recently accepted as a qualifying race for the national Gran Fondo series.

“In the last month we’ve had probably 300 new riders come in,” exclaims Oldham. “We’re not quite sure where they’re coming from. We’re getting a lot from the Wasatch Front.

We’ll have probably about 15 or 16 states represented. So we’re starting to get some recognition across the country.

In fact, Oldham says the race recently received an important national recognition.

“Earlier this year, probably about a month and a half ago, we were accepted and brought into the group called the Gran Fondo National Series.”

Logan Downtown Alliance Director Gary Saxton says that organization will make sure the riders get a warm welcome when they cross the finish line in Historic Downtown Logan. The public is invited to cheer on the riders and visit the expo.

“The expo associated with the Cache Gran Fondo is intended for spectators and participants to enjoy a venue in downtown while they watch the riders return from their various distances they are riding that day,” says Saxton. “Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 100 West, we have the expo set up. That is open to all the general public and spectators.”

Saxton says the day-long activities are co-sponsored by Cache Gran Fondo and the Alliance. He says stores will be open late and there will be a street dance as well.

Oldham says from the beginning Cache Gran Fondo has been a way to generate donations and raise awareness for charities and local causes.

It’s not too late to register for the Saturday event. For more information, call (435) 764-2979.
