Power knocked out in Smithfield and Richmond after transformer explosion

An electrical fire Wednesday afternoon knocked out power to customers in northern Smithfield and Richmond.

According to emergency radio traffic, a power transformer blew at 1:30 p.m. near 7800 North on US-91.  The explosion sparked several grass fires.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene and had the flames extinguished within 30-minutes.

Rocky Mountain Power reports the explosion damaged several electrical lines.  The outage affects almost 600 homes and businesses.  They estimate that power will be restored by 4:30 p.m.

    What about the unnamed individuals that were shooting off fireworks out of a car that lit the fields on fire starting the whole mess. also causing thousands of dollars of damaged equipment and down time in the local plants.
