Utah State has 115 student-athletes receive Mountain West Scholar-Athlete accolades for 2017-18 academic year

LOGAN, Utah – The Mountain West announced its 2017-18 Scholar-Athlete Award recipients on Tuesday and Utah State had a league-best 115 student-athletes recognized as part of a league-record 789 who were honored. The mark bested the previous year’s record pool of 756 student-athletes.

 

The Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award is one of the highest academic honors bestowed by the conference. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least two academic terms at the member institution, while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better, and participated in varsity competition in a Mountain West sponsored sport.

 

Women’s track & field represented the largest number of those recognized among Utah State’s 115, with 28 honorees. Women’s soccer was next with 17, followed by women’s cross country (16), men’s track & field (13), football and softball with eight apiece, men’s cross country and women’s volleyball with seven each, women’s basketball (4), women’s tennis (3), and men’s basketball and men’s tennis each with two.

 

Utah State’s 115 Mountain West Scholar-Athletes for the 2017-18 academic year led the league, followed by Boise State with 105. Colorado State was next with 89, followed by New Mexico and Wyoming each with 76, Fresno State (71), Nevada (64), San José State (60), UNLV (53), Air Force (51) and San Diego State (30). Colorado College rounded out the total with 10 honorees as affiliate members in women’s soccer.

 

Utah State had the most individuals honored among schools in the MW in five sports, including women’s track & field (28), women’s soccer (17), women’s cross country (16), men’s track & field (13) and men’s basketball (2) . USU also finished second among MW institutions in football (8), men’s cross country (7) and women’s volleyball (7).

 

Utah State had a total of four student-athletes on the list with a 4.0 grade point average during the 2017-18 academic year, including women’s cross country freshman Megan Bartholomew, women’s cross country junior Kashley Carter, women’s cross country sophomore Sydney Jacobs and women’s soccer sophomore Mealii Enos.

 

During the 2017-18 academic year, Utah State had a total of 274 student-athletes earn academic all-Mountain West honors and/or the Mountain West Scholar-Athlete Award.
