Firefighters contain Avon Fire

Firefighters have contained the Avon Fire after spending the last four days fighting the blaze south of Cache Valley. The fire started Thursday afternoon near the Weber Wildlife Federation Gun Range, located on the Avon Pass road.

In a Twitter post Tuesday morning, Weber County officials reported the fire was at 100 percent containment. The fire burned in thick grass and sagebrush along the Cache and Weber county line, and did not destroy any structures.

Fire managers originally estimated that the fire had burned more than 1,200 acres. They later reduced the size to 783 acres after surveying the blaze.

Nine engines, four hand crews and three tinder units have been stationed on the fire lines. They have been assisted by a helicopter and helitack crew that dropped water on hot spots.

Early when the fire started, crews closed the Avon Liberty Divide Road and evacuated the Powder Mountain Ski Resort as precautions. The closure and evacuation order were later lifted but crews are still asking motorists to drive cautiously in the area and avoid stopping along roads. Access to Pineview Reservoir was also partially restricted so aerial crews could pull water from the reservoir.

Firefighters report most of the fire burned on the Weber County side, north of Liberty and Eden. They will continue to monitor the fire for several days, extinguishing hot spots inside the containment line.
