Cache County Sheriff’s deputies temporarily closed Blacksmith Fork Canyon Wednesday afternoon after two men tried to run from law enforcement.
Lt. Brian Locke said the incident started while some detectives were in Hyrum, looking for an individual who had run from the Cache County Jail. As they attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle, the occupants fled, driving east into the canyon.
“They went up to talk to a vehicle and [the suspects] took off, fleeing the area,” explained Locke. “The deputies followed them up Blacksmith Fork Canyon. They abandoned their vehicle up there. We brought in some K-9’s and some deputies to search the area.”
The driver of the car, 28-year-old Jullian Kirkham, was hiding near the car but surrendered when the dogs led deputies to him. He was booked into jail on suspicion of failing to stop at the command of law enforcement, assaulting a police officer and other offenses.
Locke said the decision to close the canyon was out of concern for the public’s safety. It lasted about an hour.
“We didn’t know what we had initially. We just didn’t want anybody stopping and picking somebody up, and having another issue if they were just trying to help somebody, and it turned into something more than what they bargained for.”
Deputies know the identity of the second suspect who escaped from custody. They have filed arrest warrants for him and will continue to search for him.
Should not in the interest of Public Safety the second Individual be identified?
