LOGAN — A 25-year-old Logan man has been sentenced to jail for having sex with a teenage girl. Miguel A. Sanchez-Rosario was ordered to serve 7-months and will be released immediately, after being given credit for the time he has already served his arrest in June.
Sanchez-Rosario appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday morning. He previously pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, a third-degree felony.
On June 13, a 17-year-old girl reported being raped by Sanchez-Rosario. She told police about meeting him on Snapchat sometime during the previous summer.
According to the juvenile, she had consensual sex with Sanchez-Rosario three times, but on the fourth occasion he raped her. She explained telling the defendant she was not interested in having sex while they were going for a drive.
She said Sanchez-Rosario parked the car in a secluded area in Providence. While there, he forced her to perform sex acts and then raped her.
During Tuesday’s sentencing, defense attorney Shanon Demler said the defendant and victim had consensual relations in the past, but that didn’t make it right. He explained that his client is a “hard-working kid from Puerto Rico,” who moved to Logan to work.
State attorney Jacob Gordan explained that it was the victim’s family that had asked him to negotiate a plea deal for the lesser charge. He said, “I hope that he has learned that there are boundaries that he can not cross.”
