Smithfield man arrested and charged with forging checks

LOGAN — A 42-year-old Smithfield man has been arrested and charged with fraudulently cashing multiple checks, belonging to close family members. Jason Sorenson was arrested last week and booked in the Cache County Jail, where he is being held without bail.

According to Smithfield City Police reports, officers were contacted in December by the family.  They claimed Sorenson had forged at least 17 checks between September and earlier that month. The amounts ranged from $26 to $200. Most of the checks were cashed at a local bank and North Logan department store.

When investigators interviewed Sorenson, he admitted to forging 8-10 checks. He claimed the checks were used to repair the family’s furnace, pay for medical bills and buy controlled substances.

The victim’s claim Sorenson has had a history of stealing money for drugs.

Sorenson was arraigned in 1st District Court Monday afternoon, appearing by video from jail. He has been charged with 10 counts of forgery, a third-degree felony.
