Trooper jumps to safety after car almost crushes him

The Utah Highway Patrol is asking for the public’s help after a trooper narrowly missed being hit Wednesday morning.

UHP officials report the trooper was on the shoulder of I-15 near Willard when a car lost control and slammed into his patrol vehicle. He was outside his vehicle at the time and had to jump the median barrier next to his car to miss being crushed between the two vehicles.

The trooper was unhurt and only the vehicles were damaged.

The accident is similar to another crash that occurred last March in Sardine Canyon, when a motorist lost control striking UHP Sgt. Cade Brenchley. The 14-year veteran was out of his car near “big curve,” attending to another vehicle that had slid off when he was struck from behind. The impact threw him forward into the air, hitting the car he was walking towards. He was hospitalized for several days with non-life threatening injuries.

UHP officials said troopers are trained to always be mindful of their surroundings, but they asked for the public’s help, slowing down and moving over near emergency vehicles.
