The last time Mountain Crest was at home Bear River hit a crazy three pointer to send the game in to overtime but they pulled out the 57-55 win. They say sequels are never as good as the original but Bear River hit a crazy three to send the game in to overtime in what was the Region 12 game of the year. The Mustangs won 77-75.
A scoring contest broke out between Mountain Crest’s Kordell Welch and Bear River’s Mark Huber. Huber was double teamed but managed to hit an off balance three to tie the game at 68 and send the game to extra time on his way to finishing with 37 points. However, Welch scored seven of the Mustangs points in overtime to win the game and finish with 32 on the night.
On the season, the Bears had lost the first quarter only four times in 16 games, but the Mustangs got off to a quick start going up 20-9 and finishing the quarter up 25-18. Huber scored 12 straight points on a 12-2 run in the first three-and-a-half minutes to get Bear River the lead 30-27. The Bears were never able to build the gap, never leading by more than three.
Mountain Crest went on a 10-2 run to start the fourth quarter to go up 62-53 with 3:27 left in the game before the Bears came back on a 8-2 run to make it 64-61 with 1:37 left. Marshall Nethercott grabbed three offensive boards before getting fouled with 55-seconds left with a chance to expand the lead, but missed both from the line. Huber made two free throws to cut it to one. Mountain Crest played keep away before Matthew Barber made a layup with 15 seconds left to make it a 66-63 lead. Huber and Young traded free throws to make it 68-65 with 8 seconds left and then Huber hit the 3 to send the game to overtime.
Welch scored the first six points in overtime for the Mustangs but they never got up by more than three points. Mountain Crest had the ball with 30 seconds left and up three, but Parker Coombs stole the ball and put in a fast break layup to cut it 74-73. Nethercott went one of two from the line but Austin Young rebounded the miss but got tied up for a jump ball that stayed Mountain Crest, but he almost got a technical. Welch went one for two from the line to make it 76-73 with 18.1 seconds left. Kolten Summers got a layup with 8 seconds left but the clock didn’t stop until Young got fouled with 1.8 seconds left. Young went one of two to get to the final score of 77-75. Bear River tried to call time out before the inbounds play but due to a score book error couldn’t.
Mountain Crest came in scoring a combined 84 points in their opening two region games and was (4-9, 0-2). Bear River was (12-4, 1-1) on the season. Mountain Crest played only eight guys and didn’t have anyone foul out. Bear River played only six guys and Ren Fonnesbeck and Parker Coombs fouled out. Four Bear River Bears were in double figures: Huber had 37, Coombs 14, Summers 11 and Fonnesbeck 10. Three Mountain Crest Mustangs were in double figures: Welch 32, Young 19 and Barber 11.
