LOGAN — The preliminary hearing for Rand S. Meyerhoffer has been postponed after his defense attorney failed to appear in court. The 45-year-old Logan man is suspected of sexually abusing four young girls during the past 20 years.
Meyerhoffer was scheduled for the hearing Wednesday afternoon in 1st District Court. He has been charged with four counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child, a first-degree felony; and voyeurism, a class B misdemeanor.
Cache County deputy attorney Jacob Gordon was present with several of the victims, who were expected to testify. Meyerhoffer’s attorney though, Jeanne Campbell, was absent and reportedly failed to contact the court.
Judge Brian Cannell expressed frustration with the delay, noting that the court fully expected Campbell to be there. He explained that the hearing had been scheduled for a couple months. He ordered Meyerhoffer to appear again in court February 12.
According to police, detectives began investigating Meyerhoffer after one of the alleged victims told their mother that the suspect had molested her. She described how he “patted” or “touched” her inappropriately, over and underneath her clothing.
As the investigation continued, three more alleged victims described similar incidents involving Meyerhoffer. The girls ranged in ages from 8 to 11-years-old when the suspected sexual abuses occurred. All of them were acquaintances of the suspect.
The fourth victim, who is an adult now, told police how Meyerhoffer molested her for more than nine years, until she was over 20-years-old. She explained how he would purchase alcohol and drugs for her while she was a teenager. He would also get her drunk and then ask her to expose herself, while he inappropriately touched himself.
The woman claimed that Meyerhoffer took pornographic photographs of her when she was a teenager. She also said he would play “strip poker” with her and another one of the victims.
When detectives interviewed Meyerhoffer, he admitted to taking pictures of “butt cracks.” He also acknowledged to playing strip poker with the victims “a long time ago.”
Meyerhoffer is being held in the Cache County Jail without bail. He could face of up to life in prison if convicted.
