Fresh off a huge loss at home against Sky View, Bear River needed the win against Mountain Crest to keep pace in the Region 12 championship. The Bears started slow but got their revenge against the Mustangs in a dominating 64-43 win, Mountain Crest’s third lowest scoring output on the season.
The Mustangs started fast, scoring the first seven points of the game and added an 8-3 run after Bear River cut the lead to one at 9-8, but were only up 17-14 at the end of the first. The Bears took their first lead in the second quarter at 19-17 while rattling off the first 10 points on the way to a 20-7 second quarter and controlled the game the rest of the way.
Bear River scored the first seven points of the third quarter to build a 17 point lead before Mountain Crest went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to single digits but that was the closest the Mustangs could get the rest of the night. The Bears closed the third quarter on an 8-0 run and started the fourth quarter with nine more unanswered points to build a 58-33 lead. The Bears outscored the Mustangs 50-26 from the second quarter on.
Wyatt Roholt was the game high scorer with 22 and scored the first seven points of the second quarter that started the Bear River run. Mark Huber had 37 points the first time these teams met and finished the night with 17. Ren Fonnesbeck was the only other Bear with double digits, scoring 19.
Kordell Welch had a big night when the Mustangs pulled off the upset in the first meeting but was held to only 10 points tonight. Austin Young also put in 10 and Marshall Nethercott led Mountain Crest with 11 points. Turnovers were a big detriment to the Mustang offense again, coughing it over 20 times again. The finally tally of turnovers was 22-6.
