On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear a continued challenge from the Utah G.O.P. over Senate Bill 54 – the Count My Vote compromise that created a dual route to the ballot: either caucus convention system, or signature gathering, or both. Candidates can do any of those three combinations.
It’s been a divisive and contentious issue in the Utah Republican Party and the Utah Democratic Party as well. On KVNU’s For the People program on Tuesday, Cache GOP chairman Chris Booth talked about the decision.
“A little bit surprised that they would not hear the case because of the various amicus briefs that had been filed on behalf of the lawsuit, by Senator (Mike) Lee, Congressman (Rob) Bishop and various other groups as well. But it is what it is,” he said.
Booth says it has been a sore subject the last several years for those like him who are ardent supporters of the caucus and convention system. He said the system does need improvement and will take this opportunity to really go to work to make that happen. You can hear the entire interview with Booth by clicking on the link below.
