South Towns Got Talent Show set for Saturday

Marquessa Gordon, the event coordinator for Nibley City, holds up a flyer announcing this year's South Towns Got Talent Show. She said playing sports is not the only way to excel. This event provides recreational opportunities for people who may not connect with sports.

Twelve contestants are most likely getting jittery preparing for the biggest talent event in the south part of Cache Valley. The second biennial South Towns Got Talent Show will be held on Saturday, June 1, at 7 p.m. in the Mountain Crest High School auditorium, located at 255 S. 800 E. in Hyrum. Admission is free to the public.

Last years winner Dale Major and other performers of the the last South Towns Got Talent will perform during this year’s show.

Marquessa Gordon, the event coordinator for Nibley City, said there were over 30 people who auditioned for the show, and the field was narrowed to 12. The finalists were matched up with talent coaches to prepare for the big night.

Our goal was to help contestants grow their talents and the coaches are helping them for free,” she said. “The top three performers in the Youth and Adult categories will win fabulous prizes.”

Gordon said this is one of her favorite activities in Nibley.

“I didn’t play sports growing up, so I love that I get to provide recreation opportunities like this,” she said. “We want everyone to be able to participate in community recreation, whether it be through sports, fine arts or anything in between.”

Two years ago, they had great attendance and they are hoping it will grow this year. A high school rock band, Good Times, will be playing a number in which all the entertainers, even those not selected as finalists, will participate.

This year’s finalists are: Jessica Bryant (Nibley, vocal), Sadie Dayley (Millville, vocal), Lia Hugie (Nibley, aerial silks), Amanda Lofley (Nibley, dance), Ricky Lyon (Hyrum, vocal), Olivia Malm (Wellsville, vocal), Cydnee Matthews & Gabe Christensen (Nibley, dance), Madilyn Matthews & Matthew Valentine (Nibley, dance), Olivia Merkley (Providence, piano), Whitney Obray (Nibley, vocal), Sharolyn Richards (Wellsville, clogging), and Rebecca Sweeten (Nibley, guitar).

This year’s judges are Jay Richards, Brenda Anthony, Jan Richins, and Robyn Hoth.

“We are expecting the program to last about an hour and a half,” Gordon said. “We’ve invited Dave Bennett to be the Master of Ceremonies.”

This is the second South Towns Got Talent Nibley City rotates with their own city talent show. The top three acts in South Towns Got Talent of each age division will be awarded cash prizes and one lucky person will win the audience choice.

Chad Wright, the recreation and community service director, said they are really excited about this year’s show.

We have a representative from about every city in the south valley,” he said. “Some of the people in the first show, two years ago, will be part of the entertainment at this year’s show, including Dale Major who was last show’s winner.”

Sam Fowler, one of the winners of the Young Artist’s Cup, will also perform, as well as some of the previous contestants.

Gordon invited everyone to come cheer for their favorite performer and support all of our local talent.

Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
