SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Humane Society has a new executive director.

The Deseret News reported Monday that nonprofit leader Vaughn Maurice will replace Gene Baierschmidt, who announced his retirement last year after more than 30 years in the role.

Maurice has worked for several high-profile nonprofit organizations including the American Red Cross and WildCare in California. In a statement Maurice said he is impressed by the shelter’s strong community reputation and its hardworking staff.

The Utah Humane Society is a private shelter that works to get homeless animals adopted and offers veterinary care to animals. Last year the shelter reported providing services to more than 9,000 animals.
