Benson man drowns after falling into irrigation pipe

A 51-year-old Benson man died early Monday morning after allegedly falling into an irrigation pipe. The drowning was reported around 7:45 a.m. near 3846 North 2400 West.

Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said a neighbor found the man’s body and called 911. The victim appeared to have fallen head first into the pipe and was unresponsive. The neighbor was unable to free the man.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene. A deputy was the first one to arrive and was able to pull the victim from the pipe. He immediately started CPR until paramedics arrived.

Efforts to resuscitate the man were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead. State medical examiners were called to determine the exact cause and time of death.

Jensen explained that the victim usually performed his chores between 4-7 a.m., so investigators believe he may have been in the pipe for some time. The man’s identity is being withheld, pending notification of family.
