LOGAN — A 27-year-old Logan man who is facing multiple drug and theft cases may now be facing federal charges. Abraham L. Mendez is being held in the Cache County Jail without bail, after he was arrested by agents from the Cache Rich Drug Task Force.
Mendez appeared in 1st District Court Tuesday morning. He has been charged with 12 felonies, including possessing and distributing a controlled substance, theft, obstructing justice; and 7 misdemeanors.
Public defender Shannon Demler told the court that federal authorities are currently investigating Mendez. He explained that his client’s charges are likely going to be moved from state court to federal court.
Mendez did not speak during Tuesday’s hearing.
Court records show Mendez has multiple convictions previously for burglary of a vehicle, aggravated assault, driving under the influence and other drug related charges.
During Tuesday’s court appearance, Judge Brian Cannell scheduled a review hearing for July 9, to see if Mendez’s cases have been transferred to federal court. He ordered the defendant to remain in jail.
