What do you do when you win awards for something you have a true passion for? Ask Rachelle Hubsmith of North Logan. She has a winning way for cooking contests and now she wants to teach children how to bake. She plans to start a baking program for children in the area.

Rachelle Hubsmith, of North Logan, and two girls she is teaching to cook cut some freshly baked bread.

Recently, Hubsmith returned from Manhattan, Kansas as the Home Baking Champion in the 2019 National Festival of Breads baking competition. The contest was sponsored by Red Star Yeast, King Arthur Flour and the Kansas Wheat Commission.

Her Chai Ube Rosette Rolls made with purple sweet potatoes were a big hit with the judges.

The competition was the most prestigious contest the North Logan resident has entered, to this point.

“I got to rub shoulders with some big name companies,” she said. “This was a top notch competition, better than anything I had been a part of before.”

Hubsmith said they had some important people from some big industries.

“It was amazing,” she said. “In other competitions, I had to pack up my whole kitchen and bring all the ingredients I needed, as well as work with a tight time limit.

“This competition was different. They provided all the equipment, including a purple mixer and matching bowls, the ingredients, and I had a whole seven hours to bake my rolls.”

Hubsmith said people in Kansas were so friendly, and some have continued to reach out to her.

“They were the sweetest people and we had the best time,” she said. “The festival organizers provided breakfast, lunch, and dinner for us. Their attention to every little detail was so special and a lot of work!”

During her time in Kansas, Hubsmith heard about the Bake for Good Kids Program through King Arthur Flour. They provide the flour and supplies. All they ask in return is that half of what they bake is donated to a local food pantry or organization.

“I learned about the kids baking program while at the contest,” she said. ”I am touched by all the support my community has given me and I’d like to pay it forward by providing a fun place for kids to learn to bake.”

Hubsmith is no stranger to teaching kids baking and cooking. She has been hosting some classes out of her home. But now she wants to organize the bread baking program for children in the area. She just needs to find a suitable place with multiple ovens and some students.

As the 2019 National Festival of Breads champion, Hubsmith received $1,500 cash, plus a trip to attend a baking class at the King Arthur Flour Baking Education Center in Norwich, Vermont. In addition, she will receive a year’s supply (120 envelopes) of Red Star Yeast.
