More Nibley council candidates featured on For the People

NIBLEY – Nibley City has three open seats for a five-member city council. There are three incumbents in the race and seven candidates, total. A couple of the new names are Nathan Laursen and Kay Sweeten. They were both guests on KVNU’s For the People program this past Thursday. Echoing other candidates, Laursen said keeping the rural feel of the community is important but growth will continue.

“People might have to lose a little bit of their land to build a new road and those kinds of things,” Laursen explained. “But, if that’s the best option,  most citizens can kind of understand that as long as their voice is heard and there’s a discussion about it.

“So, I think that’s one of the main things I want to do is, whether elected or not, it’s engaging and getting the information out there so that people kind of understand why the decisions are being made and compromises are being made to make things happen as we grow.”

Another Nibley candidate, Kay Sweeten, has been a part of the community for 15 years. She and her husband have been raising their five children there and she is a graduate of Utah State University. She said Nibley is growing but she has a unique answer when asked if the community is still rural or if it is now officially a city.

“We had this conversation in our home not too long ago,” Sweeten said. “As I was speaking with my daughter she asked that question, ‘Mom are we rural here in Nibley?’ And I said to her, ‘Well, when you look out the window can you see the cows?’ When she said yes, I said to her ‘We’re rural!’”

She said people are drawn to the area because of its wonderful citizens, easy access to good schools and the fact that the city listens to its residents.  You can get contact information for all the candidates at NibleyCity.com.
