Box Tops are going digital

Earning money for your school is now as easy as scanning your receipt.

You can finally put those scissors away. There’s an updated way to take advantage of the decades-old Box Top program.

The new Box Tops for Education App allows you to turn your receipts into cash for your school. It is as easy as scanning your receipt, and the Box Top purchases are recognized. According to the Box Top App preview on the App Store, the school of your choice will receive a check twice a year.

Box Tops is changing to fit today’s families,” the website states. The app automatically finds participating products and instantly adds to the chosen’s school’s earnings.

Debbie Gowan, President for South Cache Council PTA is excited about this update.

“I see this as a way to get middle school and high school parents involved again,” she said. “You might think it’s just an elementary school thing, but middle schools and high schools could use that money too.”

An art teacher from Spring Creek Middle school asked her students to bring in Box Tops and was able to purchase art supplies, and a science teacher in the school was able to buy science DVDs, Gowan said.

The money these schools get is incredible,” Gowan said. “They are getting at least $500 a year, and that might even be a low estimate.”

The principal works with the PTA to decide what to buy with that money. Gowan said they purchase items like art supplies, books, and PE supplies.

“It’s amazing what they use that money for,” she added.

Gowan said schools hold contests between classrooms and big posters are displayed. Gowan said with the program being phased into digital, the volunteer position of sorting, checking and handing in the physical Box Tops will eventually not be needed.

For now, the physical Box Tops coupons can still be turned in. The Box Tops for Education website explains the traditional Box Top clips can still be found and turned in. Eventually, the packaging will have a new Box Top label that says “Scan Your Receipt”

Schools participating in the Box Tops for Education over the past 23 years have earned over $913 million. More information on the app and the transition can be found at www.BoxTops4Education.com
