LOGAN — A 54-year-old Smithfield woman who worked at the Cache County Jail, was arrested Friday on suspicion of having sex with an inmate. Teresa M. Pitcher was booked on one count of custodial sexual relations, a third-degree felony.
Cache County Sheriff Chad Jensen said Pitcher was employed by a contract food service company that provides meal services to the jail. She had been with the company for approximately four months.
Deputies became suspicious of Pitcher while monitoring inmate phone calls in the jail. As part of their normal duties they discovered conversations between Pitcher and a Utah State Prison inmate, who was being housed at the jail for the Utah Department of Corrections.
Jensen said through the investigation, deputies found there to be at least one instance where allegedly oral sex had taken place between Pitcher and the inmate. They also learned that she allegedly brought contraband into the facility for the inmate.
Pitcher was released by the food service company and is no longer employed at the jail. The suspected inmate was also transferred back to the prison.
Pitcher was booked Friday morning and later released after posting $5,000 bail.
Jensen explained that the case has been transferred to the Cache County Attorney’s Office, who will determine what criminal charges will be filed.
Court records show Pitcher doesn’t have any criminal history.
