USU professor recipient of Excellence in Extension Award

David Schramm, Utah State University assistant professor and Extension family life specialist, recently received the Western Region Excellence in Extension Award for his commitment to programs in lifelong learning and contributions to improving communities.

Schramm received the award at the 2019 Food and Agricultural Sciences Excellence in College and University Awards Program from the Cooperative Extension Section/ECOP and the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Schramm has worked for Extension for 12 years. He was an Extension state specialist at the University of Missouri for nine years and has been at USU for three years. He has secured more than $17.5 million in grants and contracts to help families and improve relationships.

Schramm’s research focuses on programs that improve parent-child and couple relationships as well as personal well-being. He helped develop an online divorce education program that is used by the state of Utah to assist divorcing parents. He regularly shares his research-based messages on his Extension Facebook account @DrDaveUSU and appears monthly on Utah’s Fox 13 TV program, The Place. He was invited to present a TEDx talk this January in Florida.

“I am passionate about sharing information on happiness, positivity and parenting, because I believe those are key areas that will sustain our society,” he said. “I have had the chance to present to very diverse audiences, from homeless populations to high school assemblies to marriage conferences. Each group has its own unique set of needs and challenges, and I love being able to help individuals and couples flourish in their life journeys.”

Schramm earned his bachelor’s degree from Brigham Young University, his master’s degree from USU and his Ph.D. from Auburn University. He and his wife Jamie have four children.
