LOGAN — Drug charges have been filed against three Utah State football players days before they are set to play in their final game of the season. The suspects include quarterback Jordan A. Love, wide-receiver Sean L. Carter and running back Gerold M. Bright.

The charges stem from an incident Saturday night at Millennial Towers, west of campus. Police were called to the apartment building around 11:30 p.m., on report of several USU athletes who were allegedly smoking marijuana.

Logan City Police Assistant Chief Jeff Simmons said when officers arrived on the scene, they could smell the odor of burnt marijuana.

“[The officers] could see which room the odor was emanating out of,” said Simmons. “They were able to make contact with the people in the room. Initially, there were six people and then they found a seventh person and determined that marijuana had been consumed in there.”

Love, Carter and Bright were each charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance in Logan City Justice Court Tuesday morning. The class B misdemeanor charge carries a sentence of up to six-months in jail and up to a $1000 fine.

Charges were also filed against Elani Rice, a track and field athlete. They include possession of a controlled substance and unlawful purchase, possession, or consumption by a minor, both class B misdemeanors.

All four are scheduled to be arraigned before Judge Lee Edwards on December 30.

Simmons said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending. All of the suspects have cooperated with police.

“The officers did have to get a search warrant for the urine of three of the folks. Otherwise, they were cooperative with officers.”

The charges were filed a day after the football team left for Frisco, Texas. Friday they face Kent State in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl.

It is unclear whether the charges will have any impact on Friday’s game. USU spokesman Tim Vitale said, “We are aware that citations were issued. We have processes in place, both in Student Conduct and in Athletics, and we’ll follow these procedures in this case.”

the most disturbing part of this story is that they are going to play in something called the “tropical smoothie cafe frisco bowl”. drugs are drugs are drugs. beer is a drug. coffee is a drug. cigarettes are a drug. get over yourselves people, smoking weed in a dorm room doesn’t concern anyone outside of that room.

Good grief. This is what the Logan Police Department is spending their time and our tax money on? Sounds like the force is over-funded if they can’t find something more important than this to do.

what losers. Sad situation for them. Throwing away their careers for a few puffs of the magic dragon. This type of stuff would never be allowed under Coach Whitt. #GoUtes.

Good job LCPD it’s about time. They get away with a lot and are cottled and babied all because there athletes. I say throw the book at them and make an example of them. And for the other commenters they were called out to check it out so it’s not like they are watching these over sized ballboobs.

Everyone needs to relax, most people who’re complaining maybe played JV sports, it’s (Marijuana) becoming LEGAL in the US. Everyone has their vice(s), look into the mirror and judge yourself before someone else. GO AGGIES! #Support!

You can bring an AR-15 assault rifle to your dorm room, no consequences, but alcohol or pot? Cuff em.

USU football player Torrey Green rapes at least 6 women and nothing happens to him until it becomes national news. But some players smoke marijuana and it is search warrants and arrests. Logan City Police Department has some messed up priorities.

Even the Logan Liar wouldn’t report on a misdemeanor like this, but good old cache valley daily did, and coach Andersen wasn’t to pleased with it.

I guess we can see why kvnu doesn’t broadcast the Aggie’s anymore.

So everyone else has known for days now that the information in your article is wrong, but you have yet to correct your article. Not only have you not corrected your article, but it is a pinned post. I like the comment from Free Bird above. “I guess we can see why kvnu doesn’t broadcast the Aggie’s anymore”. Mistakes happen, we get it. However, Will should take notes from real news stations on how to update his article with the correct information. “Ignorance is bliss” doesn’t help you maintain credibility as a news station.
