New trial rescheduled for Lewiston man suspected of viewing child porn

LOGAN — The child pornography trial for a 63-year-old Lewiston man has been rescheduled for a fourth time after previous hearings were continued. Gregory Baker is suspected viewing child pornography on his work computer before being fired.

Baker appeared in 1st District Court Monday morning. He was charged in 2016 with four counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a minor, a third-degree felony. He has pleaded not guilty.

Defense attorney Greg Skabelund asked the court for a new trial date for the middle of 2020. During the two-day trial, a judge will determine whether Baker is guilty or innocent.

Judge Angela Fonnesbeck said she was concerned in postponing the case that long. She rescheduled the trial to begin March 17 and ordered both sides to appear for a final pre-trial conference February 24.

During a preliminary hearing in 2018, the company’s IT Security Manager where Baker was employed testified that they first became alarmed in December 2015, when suspicious material appeared on his company computer. Believing it could be Malware, the company set up a nearby camera and computer program to monitor its use. Six-months later they called police after determining the defendant was using internet search engines to view pictures of young girls.

Police reported that the screen shots, taken from the computer monitoring program, appeared to be child pornography, but since they were screen shots of actual pictures, they could not be verified. They said, during an interview, Baker admitted to viewing and printing various pictures. He would then take the pictures to a bathroom and flush them down the toilet.

Baker was never booked into jail. He could face up to five-years in prison if convicted.
