Patsy Gail Newman Winger

February 15, 1942 ~ February 1, 2020 – (age 77)

Patsy Gail Winger passed away as a result of cancer on Saturday February 1, 2020 at the age of 77. Pasty was born on February 15, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Patsy was the second daughter of David Hirst Newman and Beulah Jamison.

Patsy married Richard E. “Dick” Winger on September 1, 1961. She is the mother of four children – three sons and one daughter. Patsy is survived by her Husband, three sons, R. Gary (Gina) Winger, David E. (Felice) Winger, Paul J. (Lenna) Winger, daughter Sandra L. (Bryan) Humphrey, and 18 grand-children and 9 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by Paul (Mary) Lee (whom she considers a son and who lived with her family several years) and his children and grandchildren.

Patsy grew up in Murray, Utah just off of State Street in Salt Lake City, where her father owned and operated one of the first Arctic Circle Restaurants. Patsy spent many hours working for her Dad at this restaurant. It was there that she and Dick kindled their life-long romance when she stole the coin he was flipping and later stole his heart. Patsy’s love for Dick was evidenced by her following him from one end of the country to the other with her small children for months at a time as Dick obtained additional schooling and training for his career. Although she was often alone all day with small children and no transportation for months at a time during such schooling, she viewed it as an adventure, was positive and made new friends.

Patsy worked as an administrative assistant in the counseling center at West Lake Junior High where she retired in 2002. As a young couple, she and Dick raised their family in West Valley City, where she has many close friends. Patsy had a difficult time leaving West Valley after approximately 30 years in the area. Patsy and Dick together built a home in Willard, Utah, doing a substantial amount of work themselves. Patsy and Dick were readily welcomed into the community and have many close friends and kind neighbors whom they love nearly.

Patsy loved (and continues to love) her family and friends, but most of all her husband Dick. Patsy had many friends and several special friendships. She considered many as her “adopted” children or grandchildren, including nieces, neighbors and friends of her children. She had a special bond with her children and grandchildren. She attended as many dance recitals, hockey, wrestling, gymnastics, basketball, football and other sporting events and activities as she could, both for her children and grandchildren, so much so that her grandchildren’s friends and parents knew her.

Patsy was an avid sports fan. She particularly loved BYU football and basketball. This is a love, which to Patsy’s dismay, was not shared by all of her children or grandchildren. This may be her only failing in life and was the source of good-natured teasing and discussion. Many great moments were had watching BYU games.

Patsy loved the outdoors and enjoyed spending time in the mountains. In her formative years she spent many summer days and nights at the family cabin in Big Cottonwood Canyon, where she would hike to the stream near the cabin, Donut Falls and Saint Mary’s Lake. As a young mother she would take her family to the same cabin on holidays and weekends to spend time with her parents and family. Later, she and Dick, with the help of their sons, built a cabin East of Heber in Timberlakes, where she spent many days and nights with her husband and family playing cards, putting puzzles together, taking walks, riding ATV’s or snowmobiles and just spending times with the family.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am Monday, February 10, 2020 at the Willard 5th Ward, 8230 South Highway 89, Willard, Utah. A viewing will be held Sunday evening from 5:00 – 7:00pm at Myers Mortuary, 205 South 100 East, Brigham City, Utah 84302 and Monday morning 9:30 – 10:30am at the church prior to services.
