NORTH LOGAN — Forest rangers are advising caution after a cross-country skier was injured by a moose in Green Canyon earlier this week. The skier was in the upper portion, known as Water Canyon, when the animal charged and trampled them.

Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest District Ranger Jennefer Parker said the skier told rangers that they came around a corner and spooked the animal.

“They tried to get away from (the moose),” explained Parker. “It chased them. They went off into some vegetation and at some point the moose ran over the top of them.”

A second sighting occurred a day later near the same region. The moose however did not charge and the individual fled the area.

Parker said the skier had minor injuries and sustained some bruises and broke a ski pole. The area is a narrow part of the canyon, which might have caused the moose to feel trapped.

“The individual indicated to our law enforcement officers that the moose really wanted to get off the trail and take off but the snow is really deep right now. It may have felt somewhat trapped there and may have influenced that reaction.”

Rangers advice that moose can be potentially aggressive so don’t do anything that could be perceived as a threat and retreat if you see any. Also, control dogs and keep them on-leash. If charged, try and duck behind a tree or curl up in a ball and protect your head.
