LOGAN – The metro area of Logan is #1 on a recent New York Times list of the areas with fastest growth rate in new COVID-19 cases.
That distinction comes with a recent 21 percent growth in positive cases in the Bear River Health District, well ahead of the recent 15 percent growth in cases in Huntsville, Texas. The growth in northern Utah is driven by the increase of cases at the JBS meat packing plant in Hyrum.
While the weekend BRHD report adds to the growth with 24 cases Sunday, that is still much fewer than 197 on Saturday. Sunday’s 24 new cases includes 22 in Cache County and two in Box Elder County. Among the 22 Cache County cases, 18 are 18-60 years old, two are over 60 and two are under 18; and the two Box Elder cases are between the ages of 18-60.
The caseload for the Bear River Health District stands at 782. Positives from Cache County account for 731 of the total cases with 51 from Box Elder County and none from Rich County.
Currently, 15 cases in the district are hospitalized.
The Sunday update from the Utah Department of Health shows the total positive COVID-19 caseload stands at 12,066, a daily rate increase of 2.3 percent from yesterday. While it is true the 268 cases reported Sunday marks the state’s 11th straight day of 200 or more positives, 268 is less than half the number of cases reported Saturday.
With 2,802 tests administered yesterday, 237,951 Utahns have been tested and the rate of positives for the last two and a half months is 5.1 percent.
There have been 121 total COVID-19 deaths, the same as yesterday.
There are 7,108 of Utah’s total COVID-19 cases that are considered “recovered.”
With 10 more hospitalizations yesterday, 118 positive cases are now hospitalized, and the total COVID-19 hospitalizations in Utah during the pandemic is 900.
Saturday’s Idaho report shows 3,139 confirmed COVID-19 cases and still 83 deaths. The Franklin County caseload stands at eight and there are still no cases reported in Bear Lake and Oneida counties.
Could you provide a link to the New York Times list?
I believe that JBS knew what they were doing along, but money is more important than people or lives. It is my stand on the issue, that should be finded for ever case that is positive. Why do morn one man that was killed by police, but allows JBS to threat thousands of lives here in the Cache Valley.
JBS forced sick people who called in to come to work . When testing people they had so many sick people on the floor they stopped testing and only tested office personal
This is not accurate information. It says the current hospitalized number is 15. That is not correct. If you are getting your info from brhd website, that is the total number hospitalized since this all began.
YouTube and google how to get your immune system prepared. Can’t type here or it won’t be posted but there are ways to help your immune system. Natural ways. Use them. Homeopathy, herbs, essential oils. Get informed. Don’t be a victim of the system.
Shut up DEEDEE
Is it possible to post the number of hospitalizations in Cache County? To me that seems as or even more relevant than the number of cases. The number of cases without the number of hospitalizations does not give us all of the information we need to know. Though the number of cases is very alarming, if the hospitalizations are negligible then we know the vulnerable are being better protected. If hospitalizations are on the same percent rise then we know that we are in a more severe crisis and the vulnerable are in greater danger.
According to BRHD website, there have been 10 hospitalizations total since the beginning of this (March) in Cache Valley. Whether or not that’s accurate who knows, but they say to get your numbers and info from them as they are the most up to date.
Why doesn’t BRHD shut down JBS and others like them, or at least insist that they do what’s right for the sake of human rights, workers’ rights, immigrants’ rights, and public health? The Latino workers are saying that they made them go to work while sick. Hundreds tested positive for the coronavirus on Friday and Saturday, and I just saw their work schedule for the week on FB. They are open today, Monday, and requiring their workers to come in. They couldn’t have had enough time to thoroughly clean the place. Human lives are more important than the economy. The economy can always be brought back, people cannot after they are gone. Feeling sad and disappointed in the system, very concerned about our immigrants and our entire community. This is yet another example of how people of color have been disproportionately affected by the Coronavirus because of the kind of work they do and how they are treated in the workplace. It’s wrong, and ultimately it will hurt us all because we are one community, one family.
The health department cannot shut down JBS. Pres. Trump has declared meat packing plants to be essential businesses, therefore they cannot be shut down. Remember this when you vote in November. Here are a handful of articles on it.

Brilliantly written and so true. I don’t think I have read something this poignantly written about human rights in the workforce in the news. I share your sentiment and concern for the Latino community being forced to show up for work without any concern for their health or their families. We should all be concerned in Cache Valley that we have a hotspot in a small community. People need to take it seriously, as hardly anyone is wearing masks or social distancing. The workers unfortunately are not being given the right to stay home to protect themselves. They need to shut the place down until it is thoroughly cleaned and make it mandatory for those tested with the virus stay home with pay.
Can you please list your sources?
JBS forced sick people to come to work. They should be fined they had so many sick people on the the floor that they closed down testing on the floor and just tested office personal
COUNTY BOX ELDER CACHE RICH TOTALS CASES
51-731-0=782
HOSPITALIZED
5-10-0=15
RECOVERY
20-66-0=86
DEATHS
1-1-0=2 Both deaths the patient lived out of state, caught the virus out of state, was diagnosed out of state, died out of state.
Has anyone looked into Lowers numbers? They are having/telling employees they had to return to work without testing results instead least one part of the plant. They just started to social distance and require masks after all this time and had 4 people test positive that I’m aware of.
I go into Walmart and drive past food trucks, I see the majority of Latinos to not were masks and group up by the food truck. Don’t blame it on work requirements, they can quit. It the way someone chooses to think.
Oh, shut up. I went to Wal Mart last week and got groceries in the pickup section, and not a single white person was wearing a mask either. Stop making it about race. We’re in this together, and turning it into a brown vs white thing is idiotic and backward.
I go in the mornings and the majority of people have masks and the ones that don’t are mostly Latinos. If you do not want to face the truth Zach then don’t. But the facts are the facts and Liberals cannot hide the truth. If race is not important, why does the state publish it on their website? All of this “we are all in this together” is the idiotic statement. We are all the highway together also and some idiots drive recklessly and hit other cars and kill people, I understand this that is why I take defensive actions, such as wearing a seatbelt. I also where a mask and keep a distance from those that don’t, regardless of their skin color that are careless.
Truth will never fail, but a liberal cliche will crumble in the light of truth.
Dude. I’m a small government conservative. Stop being dense.
Thank you, Zac. Tired of these white people proclaiming from their quarantined homes with their govt stimulus checks that it’s their fault for contracting the virus, but if the tables were turned they’d be high-ranking it to the nearest attorney’s office to find someone to blame for contracting the virus.
?????
There were Supervisors at the JBS plant that knew they were positive and were still coming to work and nobody seemed to care about it like it wasn’t a big issue IS THIS HOW LOW HUMAN LIFE HAS COME TO NOWADAYS ITS LIKE HUMAN HAS NO MORE VALUE ANYMORE LIKE GOING TO WORK AT JBS IS LIKE A DEATH SENTENCE
The Hispanic community was not given information in Spanish about how to protect themselves from the Coronavirus. I will add that the vast majority of people in town, no matter their race or ethnicity, are guilty of not wearing a mask or social distancing. This is plain to see anywhere you go in Logan. So please do not blame the Hispanic community. And, no, they can’t so easily just quit because they need to support their families. JBS should be held responsible for this outbreak. They can’t just walk away from their workers after causing them and their families to become infected. They should continue to pay their salaries while they are in quarantine, and they should change their policies so that this does not continue to happen. From what I understand, they are open today. There are also many potentially infected workers who are having to hunt down their test results. This is not right, and it is also happening at restaurants all over town. The numbers are higher right now than we know.
It’s JBS senior management that should be fined & should require to do community service at a hospital so they can see their mistakes. All lives matter. JBS get a clue.
Maria is right. You can not possibly blame this on the Spanish community here in Logan.Very few people are wearing masks or distancing themselves when they have a choice to do so(including whites).By the way we are all composed of the same bilogical componants regardless of the color of our skin,i’m not sure some people are aware of this.People that work can not just quit their jobs, many of them would be facing homelessness.Jb swift should have shut down the plant and allowed their workers to apply for unemployment, which i know is also a risky situation right now,and not allowed if you do not have u.s citizenship.Peoples health, and their family and childrens health should come first though, this virus does cause death in many people.I’m curious if the people working at the meat plant were even provided with masks.I sure would not want to buy JB Swift products right now.I hope all of the people in the community will recover from the virus and we can slow it down by wearing masks and social distancing, and it will eventually be outsourced.
Unless you work at JBS you don’t know anything. They did so many things to stop this. A lot of you need to understand shutting down anything is not helping. The virus is here, we just need to accept that and let it takes it course. I wore mask, washed hands, still got sick. Accept that this is not working.
There is not just one race of people who work at jbs!! All races have been affected deeply. This is about humanity not color!! Just like these riots, All LIVES MATTER!!! They should shut down the plant! Also it was BRHD that took over testing and made a colossal mess of this forcing people to wait 10 days for results!!! JBShas done everything to take care of the people and family’s that work there!!!!!!
Go TRUMP!! You have my family’s vote!!! Thank you for keeping the essential open so millions still have food and thousands still have jobs!
Lol typical. The “all lives matter” crowd loves to jump up and shout their hate because it’s too tough for them to comprehend that all lives literally will not matter until Black Lives Matter too. We know, think is harrrd!
Again, not surprising that someone such as yourself would claim to be such a lil donnie bootlicker after reading your other ignorant and unwanted comments.
Dear AlL lIvES mAtTeR crowd, just shut up.
– Sincerely,
The White People Who Aren’t Insecure
Your lame insecure and childish. And way to dum to be posting opinions. I have African American brothers and nices and nephews. ALL LIVES MATTER just not yours lol go back to kindergarten and learn respect
Many May not understand that there are a large number of false positive tests. If a person doesn’t show symptoms the rate of false positive is near 50%. The current tests test for all corona viruses. A person with a common cold could test false positive. This does not mean they have COVID-19. Key symptoms to watch for include sudden loss of taste and smell. Read a medical journal article or two and you will quickly understand that accurate diagnosis of COVID-19 is complicated. Releasing these numbers without full information is not responsible and is only leading to panic and outrage.
Literally over 99% of those infected recover.
In case anyones interested i pray every day for all of the people here who have the virus and i totally understand how terrible it would be to just take away peoples jobs, they need them.hopefully the situation will get better.Ethnicity is the spice of life.We all have different ancestors and different stories to tell,I am irish, welsh, scottish, french, swiss, icelandic, finnish, german, eastern european, african, middle eastern, portugese, and native american.and proud of it!Prayers to everyone who has contracted the virus, and a big thank you to those getting food and supplies to these people. We have a great community(and i guess i would buy jbswift products to keep the company in bussiness,we appreciate the people that work there, and whats summer without a nice big juicy steak and corn on the cob!)Heat would kill any bugs.
