LETTER: North Logan Walmart Doesn’t Support Victims of Covid

I got kicked out of the North Logan Walmart tonight. I had been shopping there for 1.5 hours and had filled 2 carts full of groceries for my dozens of employees that are in mandatory quarantine because of Covid and can’t shop for themselves.

At 8:25 p.m. the Walmart suddenly announced on the speakers that the Walmart was closing at 8:30 p.m. and to finish shopping. At 8:30 p.m. they announced they were closed and for everybody to immediately go to the checkout stands. I only had two items left on my list, but a Walmart employee was suddenly standing in the aisle rounding everybody up, physically forcing everybody to immediately go to the check out.

I explained that all of the groceries I had were for victims of Covid and these people can’t leave their house for groceries because of mandatory quarantine and that I only needed 2 more items. It all fell on deaf ears without one ounce of sympathy. I got the last 2 items on my way out and I was at the checkout stands at 8:36 p.m., but apparently they had radioed up to the cashiers and told them not to allow me to check out.

And sure enough, another Walmart employee came over and physically blocked me from checking out saying I was not allowed to check out and to leave my two carts full of groceries and leave the store. I explained that my understanding was that certain checkers stay until 9:00 p.m from my experience last week shopping there for these same Covid victims were I was able to check out at 8:45 pm, and I explained that these important groceries were for victims of Covid.

The Walmart employee said the checkout stand line I was in was going to close right after the people ahead of me were done in an attempt to further inflame the situation. I asked if some checkers were going to stay until 9:00 p.m. that could check me out, but the employee wouldn’t answer and said that all the checkers had to go on break. I asked why would they need to go on break if they said the store was closed, they would just go home instead of going on break.

The employee got visibly upset and said there was just no way they were going to allow me to checkout and to immediately leave the store. There were 10 other checkout stands currently still running at the time with people still getting checked out, but they chose instead to not support victims of Covid and forced me to leave empty handed.

So because you were doing something as a service to people with COVID, you are above the rules? That’s the kind of entitled attitude that we need LESS of in this world! Get over yourself!

If you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say it please. Cause all I’m reading from what you said is youd rather have someone that tested positive leave there house to get groceries.

That is what you’d get from it ? Walmart has been closing early for months. It’s not a new thing. It’s our responsibility to plan accordingly and to not throw a fit when we failed to do so. I would very much prefer that those infected stay home, and their caretakers should plan better.

This letter wouldn’t have been published if they followed your nice rule.

It would appear you are imagining what others say, when in reality they did not say it.
This individual should have left the other 2 items and went to the checkout when they were instructed to do so.
Would you rather shut them up than hear their opinion that you disagree with?

Wrong. This employee should have helped gather the last two items and helped the shopper get the items checked out quickly. Causing trouble and arguing took more time than actually helping the situation. Had the employee helped the letter to the editor would be much different. And yes, I work in retail and I would have totally helped this person get the groceries and helped check out because two carts are a lot to handle and serving others makes you feel good.

If you want the virus, shop at Walmart- customers don’t wear masks because they think it takes away their “freedom”. This moronic display of ignorance is exactly the bad behavior that is spreading the disease. Public health be damned.

That’s what happens when you can’t follow directions you were probably a spoiled rotten kid also. This is just a small example of why people get shot by police they think they don’t have to follow directions and fight and resist and flee. So stop whining and go shopping early enough

Oh man. I hate when i dont get to ignore rules too and dont get my way. Your sympathy story doesnt make walmart the bad guy here. Youre welcome to shop at other stores…i think Lees is open later. Go there and stop whining

All you people on Walmart’s side are a bunch of idiots. They should of allowed that person to check out. Also they made more work for themselves by having to put all those items back on the shelves.

    • Brian June 18, 2020 at 7:44 am Reply

No, we’re not idiots. We’ve worked retail long enough to not give two craps about someone’s sob story to get what they want, policy be damned.

  • Ellie June 17, 2020 at 5:23 pm Reply

As someone who works retail, no. Just no to everything. You want special treatment and you don’t get it. You’re asking people to stay late. Do you know if they get overtime they can get in trouble. Up to and including termination. Were those two items worth anyone else’s livelihood? I doubt it.

Consider that these people want to get home to their families. They’ve worked 8, 9, 10, 12 hours and now you’re asking them to stay another half hour? Get outta here with that.

If a store closes at 8:30 you’re lucky to get to check out. In the stores I have run I have always had a rule: store closes at whatever time it closes and if I’m not actively ringing you up at that time: you leave.

Why? Because registers have to be counted down. I can count a register down in about 3 minutes. You said there were 10 cashiers, not to mention the self check out lanes (which have 8 terminals) thats nearly one hour worth of work, and cashiers aren’t allowed to count their own. Your extra minutes you wanted aren’t just an extra 5 or 10 minutes. Yes, it adds that, but it adds that an hour later. Thats a huge ask.

You can complain all you want that this is unfair and say that they don’t care about COVID patients. But in reality, its YOU that doesn’t care about others. 10 cashiers you asked to stay late just for you. How is that fair to them? To their families? To their kids who barely get a kiss goodnight?

Its not. Stop being selfish. Go earlier next time.

I am quite sure that they were announcing way before 8:25 that they were closing at 8:30. there’s always a certain few that think that they can always push the button, that rules are made for someone else, not them. why is your time any more important than those cashiers who have been standing there for hours. next time if you’re going to plan being in the store at closing time you need to start getting there a little bit early and stop worrying about your agenda. that’s what’s the matter with this old world today, everyone is just worried about their self.

Wow… The comments here remind me why Cache Valley is one of the worst communities I have ever lived in.

It’s not uncommon for retail stores lock/block the front doors at closing time and then assist the last struggling customer or two find what they need to speed up the process of closing. Many major retail companies have policies that actual dictate as much and it’s possible the employees violated corporate policy here.

I would post these frustrations on Twitter, contact the Better Business Bureau to file a complaint, and contact Wal-Mart’s corporate feedback if you want something actually done.

Courtesy works both ways though. While the employees should have provided good customer service, the writer should also be more aware of and respect their time.

That being said, it’s also likely many of them won’t have jobs in a few years as retail increasing becomes automated. Amazon has been testing cashierless stores for a while now (there’s actually not even a checkout; it all happens automatically as you shop) as well as increasingly automating it’s warehouses. Wal-Mart is beginning to ramp up testing of similar systems for their stores.

Best Place I Have Ever Lived! LOve this valley

I have been in Walmart at 6:30 p.m., and have heard the announcement saying they were closing at 8:30 p.m.. Many retail stores have special hours for seniors or people that need special consideration. I’m sure that if you went at those times the employees would be happy to help you.

  • John June 17, 2020 at 9:20 pm Reply

I’m sure there is more to the story. Probably more verbal assaults thrown at the employees and social distancing rules not being followed. Three cheers for the employees at Walmart who have to put up with this type of customer every day.

From what I heard, he was purpisely coughing on one of the employees after they told him he needed to head to check out

You stated in your letter that the week before someone checked you out at 8:45 and then this week you were late getting into check out. It appears you feel that the rules don’t apply to you. It’s one thing to get to check out late once, but it seems that is your norm.

  • KA June 18, 2020 at 9:09 am Reply

It’s easy enough to find out the hours of any store you would like to go to. You’re not a victim here. Just go earlier next time.

Same attitude that leads to 16,000,000 illegals in this country. Rules are not for me – no sir.

  • Britney June 19, 2020 at 7:42 am Reply

It is really sad to read all these condemning replies. Is there no more compassion left in this once great valley? Maybe this shopper was running late because he served others or was at work before and couldn’t make it earlier? Immediately people condemn him. I wish I would have been there, I would have helped get the groceries and check out. A little compassion goes a long way. Sounds like a lot of self righteous people have moved to The Valley who never run late for anything. How sad to see the once compassionate place become one of a big town atmosphere with rude behavior and no charity.

    • anon June 19, 2020 at 11:57 am Reply

Except that the writer admitted to having checked out late before. So really is sounds like someone who thinks he’s above the rules.

    • Don June 22, 2020 at 10:05 pm Reply

If you would have helped him, Britney, that means you are overqualified to work at Wal-Mart.

Okay but why publish this under a fake name when you posted to your public Facebook Brian Hirschi? Are you worried of the backlash to your rental business in Bear Lake for you being a ridiculous person?
